Potential Applications and Pitfalls of Ultrasound for Managing Reproduction in Dairy Cattle

چکیده

Introduction In 1986, O. J. Ginther stated that “gray-scale diagnostic ultrasonography is the most profound technological advance in the field of large animal research and clinical reproduction since the introduction of transrectal palpation and radioimmunoassay of circulating hormones.” (Ginther, 1986). Transition of ultrasound technology from a specialized research tool to a practical tool for managing reproduction on dairy farms has already begun. Early integration of ultrasound technology to the cattle industry included applications such as transvaginal follicular aspiration and oocyte recovery (Meintjes et al., 1993; Pieterse et al., 1988; Pieterse et al., 1991) and as a complementary technology for embryo transfer procedures. These applications, however, are specialized and will not likely constitute widespread use of ultrasound technology.

Trace Mineral Requirements for Dairy Cattle

A host of nutrients are needed by cattle to support functions associated with life, and to grow, reproduce, and nourish their offspring (i.e., produce milk). A vast amount of resources have been expended to quantify the amounts of specific nutrients needed to perform these function so that economically efficient diets can be formulated. Feeding diets that provide adequate, but not excessive, am...

Effect of estradiol and cloprostenol combination therapy on expulsion of mummified fetus and subsequent fertility in four crossbred cows

Four crossbred cows with mummified fetus were utilized for the study. The cows were subjected to gynecological examination and based on the findings the cases were diagnosed as mummified fetus. The cows were treated with 2 mg estradiol valerate and 500 µg cloprostenol and were examined every 12 hr after 24 hr of the treatment for cervical dilatation and other signs related to fetal expulsion. T...
